I’m Thinking of Ending Things, more like I’m Thinking I Won’t Be Getting Any Sleep Tonight, fuck, man. When I first bought this book I thought it was about something TOTALLY DIFFERENT. I thought it was about something joyful like a kid dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts, which for some fucked up reason is one of my favorite book genres. Holden Caufield is my boyfriend. THIS IS NOT WHAT THIS BOOK IS ABOUT. No sir.
This book is terrifying. Like, can’t read at night because the shadow monsters are going to come and get you while your boyfriend is sleeping and he won’t hear your screams for help. I will be the first to admit that I am a gigantic pussy when it comes to anything scary/horror-related, but this book is so fucking creepy. Get-inside-your-head-creepy, the WORST kind of creepy, in my honest opinion.
The book starts with a young couple in a car on the way to visit Jake’s parents for the first time. Jake and his girlfriend have only been dating for three weeks but they really seem to be hitting it off and decide to take their relationship to the next level (idiots). We never learn the narrator/girlfriend’s name which adds even more creepiness to the mix. Once they arrive at his parent’s house, shit gets WEIRD. Not even totally horrifying, just a lingering creepy feeling that doesn’t go away throughout the entire novel. After dinner with Jake’s parents, the story progresses and starts to spiral into this “oh no please no what the actual fuck is happening right now” pithole and you have no idea what’s going to happen on the next page.
The book itself was pretty good, it kept my attention from start to finish and that’s the shit I like. There were definitely a few major plotholes which I keep coming back to, and have yet to find an answer resolving them. Suuuuuuuper annoying because the plotholes are glaringly obvious. As the book progresses, the story becomes weirder and weirder… and the ending is open to your own interpretation. I want someone to read this so we can discuss it, the ending can go so many different ways and I’m sick of staying up all night contemplating it. Read it.

I love your bluntness oh so much! I’ve seen this book around and I think the consensus was that it is indeed creepy as fuck. Boo to the major plot holes! I do however enjoy a good open ending that is left up to the readers interpretation… this sounds like a good book club selection!

It’s beyond creepy. But yes, it would be a great book club read! You’re left with so many questions. Love it!
